“There’s often a misconception that families in Marin and Napa are wealthy and have few problems,” says our local chapter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. “Unfortunately,Marin and Napa are home to thousands of families in need of our mentoring services.”Tamiscal High School students are responding to this challenge by working with kids throughout Marin as mentors in the Big Brothers Big Sisters’Youth-for-Youth program. In this program, high school students (ages 14-18), or “Bigs,” spend time after school with elementary or middle school students in Marin City, San Rafael and Napa. The elementary and middle school students, or “Littles,” range from ages six to twelve. Besides being a mentor, high school students can work in a Big Brothers Big Sisters office in an intern-type position. A student with interests in working with non-profit organizations in the future will benefit from this the most.High school students can also help in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake. This is a Teen Night when teams of teens bowl to raise money. If anyone—student or not—over the age of eighteen wants to be a big brother or sister, there are other Big Brothers Big Sisters programs where adults are matched with children too.
