When a few moms realized that there were no children’s hospitals in the Los Angeles area, they decided that a hospital was greatly needed. Founded in 1901 by these moms, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles feels like a second home to its patients. Childrens Hospital Los Angeles focuses on many different units. The units include Transplants, Heart, Lung, Kidney, Liver, Cancer, Brain, Orthopedic, Research, Vision, and Pulmonary, to name a few. In a single year, they see roughly 350,000 patients and almost half of them are under the age of five. In the hospital, there are more than thirty-four languages spoken. Each time a child has a checkup, an operation, or a medical procedure, a toy is given to them. Each week, 500 to 600 toys are distributed throughout the hospital. As anyone can conclude, toys are always needed. Some ways to help are by donating new 12toys to the hospital, participating through volunteer hours, or contributing your time and ideas. Some volunteer opportunities include “Gift Wrapping in the North Pole” and “Holidays from the Heart.” The program, “Holidays from the Heart,” helps families who can’t afford to buy presents for their holiday celebrations. A family adopts another family and buys them gifts, so the holidays can be special for everyone. Gift-wrapping is another way to help. Childrens Hospital is an amazing facility and changes people’s lives for the better.
