Alexandria House is a non-profit organization that serves to temporarily house women and children as an emergency shelter to move them towards economic stability. It was founded in 1996 by Sister Judy, the current director. The house offers a communityoriented, multicultural and anti-racist environment where poor women and their children can stay. The location is in the mid-Wilshire area where it provides enriched opportunities not only for women and children staying at the house, but also for neighbors. Weekly meetings are held to converse about experiences, successes and hopes for the future. The programs that they offer include financial management, goal-setting procedures, child care, counseling, health care and access to other necessary resources such as job search assistance, legal counsel, advocacy and skills-building. The latest event held at Alexandria House was the 10th anniversary fundraiser. Volunteers are always needed to help take care of children, cook and clean. For the neighborhood, there is a homework assistance program where people of high school level or older assist kids between 6 and 11 years old with their schoolwork. There are also teen programs, computer literacy classes, family field trips and an advocacy and referral service. Donations are always welcome and there are many different items that can be given such as gently used clothes, food, appliances and furniture. Calendars with artwork from the residents can be bought and checks can be sent to the house for additional funding. This community shares a loving atmosphere that carries on the mission of supporting one another.
