The first thing people notice when they enter The Access Center is a silver-plated moniker that reads:"From Homelessness to Hope." This is exactly whatthis center is all about: promoting human welfareand reaching out to those who are less fortunate than we are.The Access Center, formerly known as the OPCC(Ocean Park Community Center), was established in 1976 and was designed with the people they were to help in mind. This organization has been helping for years to feed, clothe and guide the homeless population on their journey to creating better lives for themselves. Everyone is accepted at the center, and the volunteers get to work with people from many different walks of life. The Access Center has one of the most successful housing programs in the nation, withover a 90 percent placement success rate. The center also has a school out reach program which has provided counseling to over 350 children since its opening. It is very easy to get involved with The Access Center. All that is required of potential volunteers is the completion of an application, attendance at a brief orientation, and finally, "a willingness to lend a hand." For those who do not wish to volunteer, the center is always open to donations of items including clothing, towels, toiletries or food.
